English for Health Professionals: Doctors

Overview

Course demonstration

English for Health Professionals: Doctors is an online course designed for doctors who wish to improve their spoken communication with patients.

The course is video based. Observations and interactive tasks encourage the health professional to explore the communication presented. Lists of useful language, explanations of language points, fact sheets and case studies are provided for further practice.

The six units in the course are based on three consultations. Units 1 to 5 provide extensive listening practice, a range of language and pronunciation exercises and a rich bank of supporting resources.

Units 1 and 2 demonstrate a consultation for migraine. The GP takes a basic history, does a brief physical examination, makes a diagnosis, explains the condition and gives the patient management advice.

Units 3 to 5 are based on two consultations for angina. In the first consultation the GP takes a history, makes a diagnosis, refers the patient to a specialist and prescribes medication. In the follow-up consultation the GP assists the patient with behavioural change, in this case, quitting smoking.

Unit 6 has audio recordings of useful language.
