Frequently Asked Questions

Is it important to attend all the classes?

Yes. AMEP students have attendance responsibilities. You must:

  • finish the course you start
  • contact your teacher, if you are absent for any reason
  • tell the Coordinator of Studies, if you wish to withdraw from your course so that you can be offered another class or another way of studying

Can I work and study at the same time?

Yes. With NSW AMES you can study:

  • in full-time classes during the day
  • in part-time classes, during the day, evening or on Saturdays
  • in classes with additional lessons online – blended learning
  • by distance with a teacher who phones and sends lessons to you
  • online at www.englishatames.com.au
  • with a home tutor who visits you each week
  • independently in our educational computer rooms and individual learning centres

Do I lose any of my 510 hours if I stop coming to class or need to take time off?

You may lose your hours if you do not tell us why you need to take time off from your studies. If you need to take time off for personal or family reasons, you must tell us that you will be leaving the course for a period of time. When you are able to return to your studies, come back to the centre to enrol.

Can I change my class hours?

Yes. You can reduce or increase your hours of study. You can also change to distance learning or online lessons. Please speak to your teacher, our administration staff, or the Coordinator of Studies.

I can’t attend a class because I have a small child. How can I study?

Many AMEP students are eligible for free childcare which allows them to attend classes knowing that their children are being looked after. Or you may prefer other ways to study such as:

  • by distance with a teacher who phones and sends lessons to you
  • online at www.englishatames.com.au
  • with a home tutor who visits you each week

I have started a Certificate III course at TAFE but I am finding it hard because of my English level. Can I continue studying free English lessons?

If you haven’t used all of your 510 hours under the AMEP you can usually attend AMEP English classes. Studying CSWE part time, by distance learning or online would allow you to improve your English at the same time as studying at TAFE.

Who can I talk to if I have a problem?

First talk to your teacher. Your teacher may suggest you talk to the Coordinator of Studies, or a NSW AMES educational counsellor.

What can I do if I have a complaint?

If you have a problem with NSW AMES or want to make a complaint you can report it to your teacher or the Coordinator at your teaching centre. We will deal with your concerns promptly and confidentially. The NSW Department of Education & Training Complaints Handling Policy Guidelines are available online.

Can I apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL from previous training, work or life experience is available to all students. When you begin your studies we give you information about how to apply for RPL. As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), NSW AMES recognises all equivalent qualifications issued by RTOs under the Australian Quality Training Framework.

Am I assessed?

When you begin your studies with NSW AMES, we give you information about assessment and how we record and report your results. If you have any questions or concerns about assessment or want to make an appeal, first talk to your teacher. At the end of your course we give you a written record to show that you have successfully completed a module, course or qualification.

Can I study English after I finish my 510 AMEP hours?

Yes. You can continue to study with NSW AMES, but you must pay a fee or enrol in another government funded program. The Educational Counsellor can also tell you about other places where you can continue your studies.
