Courses for Volunteers

Volunteer English Language Tutor Training allows you to work as a volunteer tutor with migrants and refugees who are unable to attend formal classes. Home tutors help their students learn basic language skills and adjust to life in Australia by tutoring for one to two hours per week. The training course is free of charge.

The Home Tutor scheme is run in partnership between NSW AMES and The Smith Family.

The course helps you to:

  • understand the role of the volunteer tutor
  • understand the impact of the migration and settlement process on the learner
  • develop a knowledge of current approaches to tutoring speakers of languages other than English
  • prepare and deliver learning sessions appropriate to individual and group tutoring
  • evaluate a tutoring program

This is an 18-hour face-to-face course offered as three-hour sessions over six weeks, leading to a Statement of Attainment in Volunteer English Language Tutoring.

How to enrol

Contact The Smith Family directly for an information pack and application forms. You will also be required to participate in an interview to assess your suitability for the course.
